Keeping Up to Date on Current Retirement Plan Regulations

It seems like the tax rules pertaining to retirement plans are constantly being revised, interpreted, and tweaked by the U.S. Congress.  The best way to find out the current rules is to go directly to the source:  the IRS web site at http://www.irs.ustreas.gov.  In addition to regular updates of changes in the regulations, you will find downloadable publications that cover all of the various pension plans.  Here are some of the publications that cover current retirement plan rules:

Publication 721 – Tax Guide to U.S. Civil Service Retirement Benefits

Publication 17 –  Your Federal Income Tax

Publication 517 – Social Security for Members of the Clergy and Religious Workers

Publication 554 – Tax Guide for Older Americans

Publication 560 – Retirement Plans for Small Business

Publication 571 – Tax-sheltered Annuity Programs for Employees of Public Schools and Certain Tax-exempt Organizations

Publication 575 – Pension and Annuity Income

Publication 590 – Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs)

Publication 915 – Social Security Benefits and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits
